What is the CDS Exam?

The CDS (Combined Defence Services) Exam is a national-level competitive exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). It selects candidates for admission into the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Purpose:

To recruit young, dynamic individuals as officers in the Indian Armed Forces.

Written exam followed by SSB Interview, medical examination & All India Rank

Entry Types:

For Indian Military Academy (IMA), Officers Training Academy (OTA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), and Air Force Academy (AFA).

Who Conducts the CDS Exam?

The CDS Exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), which is responsible for organizing several prestigious exams in India, including IAS, IPS, and NDA.

Eligibility Criteria for the CDS Exam

For Male Candidates:

Age Limit:

IMA (Indian Military Academy):

19–23 years

INA (Indian Naval Academy):

19–24 years

AFA (Air Force Academy):

19–24 years

OTA (Officers Training Academy):

19–25 years

Educational Qualification:

IMA & INA:

Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university

AFA:

Engineering degree or Bachelor’s degree with Physics and Mathematics

Marital Status:

Unmarried

For Female Candidates:

OTA (Officers Training Academy):

Age Limit:

19–25 years (for both CDS I & II)

Educational Qualification:

Bachelor’s degree in any discipline

Marital Status:

Unmarried, widows, and divorcees (without children) are eligible

Important:

Female candidates are eligible for OTA only in CDS.

CDS Exam Pattern

The exam consists of three papers:

IMA (Indian Military Academy):

English (100 marks)

Objective type, tests grammar and vocabulary

General Knowledge (100 marks)

Includes current affairs, history, geography, etc.

Elementary Mathematics (100 marks)

Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, etc.

OTA (Officers Training Academy):

English (100 marks)

Objective type, tests grammar and vocabulary

General Knowledge (100 marks)

Includes current affairs, history, geography, etc.

Duration:

2 hours for each paper

Mode:

Offline (pen-and-paper)

Negative Marking:

1/3rd mark deducted for incorrect answers
